(Photography and observation of wildlife through the strategy of hiding) HIDE.

For wild fauna, mainly birds photography, using the technique of hiding and the preparation of scenarios, in which desired backgrounds and/or lighting are pursued, are perhaps the most used strategies.

The English term of Hide is used to describe the structures used to hide and get images that simple human presence difficult largely because it is suspicious or discrete species. There is a multitude of possibilities and models employed for this purpose. In principle, the purpose of the Hide is camouflage or at least hide, but ideally, is that they get a cryptic immersion in the environment that are located.  With this idea staining and the material used for its preparation should be the most homogeneous with the medium in which it is located. We have in mind that we must not cause damage to vegetation and avoid other disrespectful transformations with the nature of the area. We will have to act with a great deal of common sense both when constructing our Hide, as in getting photographs of the chosen species. Following this principle we avoid materials which for example are too bright, that reflect sunlight or produce an unnatural noise when they are agitated by the wind. Higher constructions are also causing more mistrust. Is very common, the use of the so-called tumbing-hides where the individual is camouflaged while lying on the ground. There are also hidrohides to the aquatic media and any variant that we are able to imagine. As we have already pointed out the common sense it takes us to get for example, dark clothes and Interior habitats to avoid detection in backlit situations.

There is a great variety of Hides we can build or even buy. We find them in the sections of many specialized or sport hunting shops. In reality the principle is similar to the stalking technique used in hunting, for example existing chairs hides of reduced weight that can be carried further away from roads, roads or highways. Different types of hunting hides are sold, even tents that can be used or adapted for our photos.  They can also be handmade manufacture with wood, metal or aluminium and coated with one or more opaque camouflage fabrics, green or brown, and then conceal it with dry branches or other natural elements, without damaging the environment.

The Hides are an important part to photograph many species although it is also the use of drinkers and feeders in settings with adequate perches who achieve a natural and pleasant environment for our photography. THE following image shows the conditioning of the drinking fountain, perches and feeder.

Nor should we forget that the location of a Hide requires us to ask permission, either to the managers of the site, environmental institutions and/or the owner of the land in which we pretend to place it. Sometimes we have to expose our intentions and to show

Success will largely depend on our knowledge of nature and the ecology of the species that we try to photograph, also depends on our patience, discretion and perseverance and sometimes the luck factor that leads us to get some pictures, against all odds, in apparently adverse situations. I show here some photos of a Hide in construction before being coated with dry branches and a scenario also in preparation.  A picture of a Robin made from the aforementioned hide.
